Venture Crew 53  Creates Library and Brings School Supplies for a Peruvian Village

March 1, 2006 --

Update: February 20, 2006,  Clover Park Rotary and Lakewood Rotary  donate $2000 to Project Peru.

 Project Peru

Project Peru is mission to promote cultural and historical awareness, provide literacy and educational materials and foster international goodwill by creating a bond between the children of the US and Peru.

Goals:

The goals of Project Peru are:

1)      To provide literacy materials for a rural school and library.

2)      To provide much needed school supplies for those rural school students.

3)      To provide teaching materials requested by the teachers of the rural school.

4)      To provide clothing for children of the surrounding village.

5)      To procure 1000 tree saplings from the University of Cusco and plant them to reforest a site around the new library.

6)      To form a lasting relationship with the students of the school and the surrounding community.

7)      To provide an experience for our young ambassadors which teaches the value of helping others in a global perspective.

8)      To foster self-esteem among the oppressed Inca population and promote their self-declared goal of “..ignorance stops with us (the parents)…”

9)      To hike the Trail of the Incas from Cusco to Machu Picchu and to visit various villages and archeological sites on the trail and others near Lake Titicaca.

The Project:

Participants in the Peru Project…

1)      Need to be members of BSA Venture Crew 53 based at Little Church on the Prairie, Lakewood, WA, and be between the ages of 14 to 20.

2)      Must participate in fund raising projects, begun in September of 2004, to raise the $3500 per person airfare and lodging.  There are no scholarships.

3)      Are required to enroll and master basic conversational Spanish.

4)      Are required to pursue a course of physical training to ready themselves for the stress of high altitude life and the ardors of mountain climbing.

5)      Are required to study customs, history and geography of Peru at monthly meetings.

6)      Are required to participate in acquisition of materials (books, clothing, teaching materials and donations) to facilitate the successful completion of the Peru Project Goals.

Progress so far Crew 53 has…

1)      Volunteered for the Sportsman’s Dinner to facilitate the distribution of the auction items to their winning bidders.

2)      Made contact with Quipunet, a Peruvian charitable organization based in USA, which has established contacts with and provides information about our specific school, library and community where our project will impact.

3)      Acquired a $2000 donation of books and library materials in Spanish from Scholastic Books.

4)      Received approval from World Visions for donations of school supplies.

5)      Have solicited instructional materials from LM Net, the national Library Media Network.

6)      Have organized clothing drives at various elementary schools to collect sweaters and other warm clothing.

7)      Have organized a fund-raiser at two local schools to raise funds for the purchase of the trees for the re-forestation project.

8)      Organized a reforestation project through the University of Cusco.

9)      Applied for and received hiking permits for the Trail of the Incas.

Venture Crew 53 will need at least $4000 to pay the additional freight charges incurred in the shipping of books, school supplies and teaching materials and clothing.

Summary

The need of the Peruvian people is great.  The oppressed people of this third world country are some of the poorest and most downtrodden.  Until recently, the goal of eating, everyday, was their only goal.

Now, with the help of missions like ours and the efforts of Quipunet, parents have declared a new goal.  As one young father voiced at a Huanoquite town meeting, “..ignorance stops with us (the parents)..”

Help us provide a brighter future for these Peruvian families and their children.

Yours,

Ellen Billingsley
